favorite sports and many of them turn to their local bookie or bookmaker. This
is why more and more people are looking to become bookmakers. Depending on the
outcomes, bookies take a portion of the winnings or pay some percentages out.
As a bookie you probably have come across the term reverse
line moves. In this article, we will go into detail to explain what this is and
how you can use them to your advantage when booking wagers for a game. When you
post the opening point spreads, you will usually move those numbers around over
the course of the day, and the main reason for that will be that more money is
wagered on one side than it is wagered on the other.
For instance, if you have a line for the Bucks that opens at
-4 against the Bulls and more money has been bet on the Bucks, you will want to
move the point spread to the Bucks -5 and that will attract bets on the Bulls.
The point spread change makes betting for the Bulls more attractive as opposed
to betting on the Bucks, and this will generate more money on the Bulls’ side.
In the reverse line move, you want to do the opposite, moving the point spread
to the Bucks -3, even though more bets are on the Bucks.
In a reverse line move, you want to attract more bets on a
particular team, and actually have the majority of wagers on one side. To be
profitable, bettors have to be correct 53% of the time, while bookies need only
be correct 48% of the times to make money. Reverse line moves can also be used
in baseball and hockey games, changing the odds accordingly. For example, if
the Yankees are -150 against the Angels, and most bets are on the Yankees, in a
normal line you would change the odds to Yankees -155 or -160. In a reverse
line move, you want to move the odds down and would end up with something like
Yankees -140.
